Maybe favor giveaways for a party? Or hanging around as a decoration?
Or as a package topper for a gift for that special graduate? Or to dress up a celebration for a grown-up grad?
Or maybe just to hang from the rear-view mirror?
In our house, we love to collect ornaments. Then every December we reminisce as we decorate... places we've traveled, gifts from friends, weddings, special events in our own family. So a special mortar board ornament seems appropriate to remember such a momentous occasion. And this is so easy and inexpensive that you can whip a bunch up if you want to share the memory.
MORTAR BOARD ORNAMENT
Supplies:
- Black Felt
- Black Embroidery Floss
- Embroidery Floss in your school colors
- Needle
- Scissors
- Cut out two matching squares from the black felt. Mine are about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". Then cut a thin strip. Mine is about 1/3" wide and about 4" long.
- Taking one of the squares, start threading your school color embroidery floss through. Make sure that the thread is knotted on one side. I just experimented and kept threading pieces through, cut them to size (tying to the larger bunch), and then threaded another one.
- Loop the strip of felt into a circle, moving it to the size you want. You only need a little overlap, so cut off any excess. Stitch the circle together.
- Center it on the plain black square and lightly stitch the edge of the circle to the felt square. I think what I did is considered a whip stitch.
- Now stitch the two squares together using a blanket stitch. [NOTE: To make the ornament, I stopped at my "top" point. I determined how much thread I needed for my loop and then knotted it at the end. I then resumed stitching the pieces together. But you could use ribbon for the loop or forgo it entirely.]
- Finish stitching the squares together and tie off your thread, hiding the ends. That's it.
I hope you enjoy!
