Fish Barrettes

Our house is busy gearing up for our holiday season... June.  From Memorial Day until Bastille Day, we find ourselves in a dizzying array celebrating not only Memorial Day and Fourth of July but also my husband's birthday, my daughter's birthday, Father's Day, our wedding anniversary, and my birthday.  Only my son's birthday escapes this period of madness.

As you can guess, my daughter's birthday seems to trump all the other celebrations (poor Daddy).  So we are in the midst of birthday preparations.

For her 3rd birthday, we're hosting a Water themed party... all in orange and blues.  After all, a June birthday just screams for playing outside, and water is a necessity to cool down in the heat.  And since she's still at an age where she has girl and boy friends, I wanted to go with something gender neutral.

Much more will be shared over the next month, but I wanted to share one little project with everyone as we all gear up for a summer of sunshine (at least in the northern hemisphere).  These little fish barrettes will be part of the party favors for the girls.  Bright, fun, and summery.  I'm hoping they enjoy.

FISH BARRETTE TUTORIAL

Supplies:

• Orange Felt
• Blue Felt
• Matching Orange and Blue Floss
• Blue Translucent Bead
• Martha Stewart Embossed Fish Paper Punch (optional)
• Scissors
• Needle
• Barrettes
• Cardstock and Pencil

Directions:

1. Trace your barrette on cardstock, leaving a 1/8" allowance all along the edges.  Cut out to make your template.
2. Cut out two pieces of the blue felt using your template as a guide.
   
3. Cut out your fish from the orange felt.  I used the Martha Stewart Embossed Fish Punch as a template.  (The fish will be a recurring motif for the party.)
   
4. You should now have two pieces of blue felt and an orange felt fish.
   
5. With the orange embroidery floss, stitch the fish to one piece of blue felt by sewing two zigzag lines across the fish.  Next, stitch the bead on to make an eye.
   
6. Taking your other felt piece, lay the barrette on top and mark where the center clasp would need to come through.  Cut a small slit in the felt to feed it through.  (I forgot to take a picture here.  However, you can check out the Valentine's Barrette tutorial for one.)
7. Now place your two felt pieces together (with the body of the barrette in the middle.  Only the clasp should be sticking out.  Using the blue embroidery floss, whip-stitch the two pieces of felt together.  (Tip:  I start under the edge of the fish so I can hide any knots.)
